With millions of literature documents available online, exploring them wisely becomes an almost impossible challenge. Literature dedicated visual mapping software rose from this challenge. This thesis aims to investigate some of the most advanced software in this domain: Open Knowledge Maps, Open Research Knowledge Graph, InfraNodus, Connected Papers, Litmaps, Inciteful and Research Rabbit. A literature review presents the workflow for each of these software. A case study provides a common background for analysing and comparing the aforementioned software that produces knowledge maps whose map components are literature documents. The results suggest that Research Rabbit uses a more relaxed search when selecting documents for its map, and that the different nature of Open Knowledge Maps also provides a more varied selection of documents than the other software. This study shows that users should be cautious about the data found in the maps and recommends using more than one software to avoid any bias that a single software might induce.
