In this thesis, we will study the communication protocol called Matrix. This open-source protocol is designed for communicating between groups and users similarly to Whatsapp. It is, however, designed with fundamental differences that will be studied in this work. The communication protocol will be first introduced and compared to other applications competing in the same space. It will be then studied using the i∗ representation framework. This allows to gain a clear view of the system and its dependencies. Special attention is put to highlighting the resilience of the communication system and its privacy-focused approach. A Strategic Dependencies view that covers the global systems is provided and is then enhanced using multiple Strategic Rationale for each stakeholder, highlighting the inner working of the studied system. The thesis is then concluded and future works are proposed.
