The enthalpies of formation of a series of saturated and unsaturated closed-shell silicon-containing compounds have been calculated using various ab initio methods of quantum chemistry adapted to the size of the species under consideration. A large variety of bond energy terms involving the silicon, germanium or tin atom were derived from our theoretical results and some available experimental data. Some interesting applications of these bond energy terms, namely the determination of stabilization energies, pi-bond energies and Pauling's electronegativities are also described in this paper.
