In 1975 excavations in the Caseggiato dei Lottatori (Ostia V, III, 1) brought to light painting fragments of several collapsed walls and ceilings. This paper discusses the scheme of a red and black wall painting reconstructed out of 142 fragments. The wall is an example of the Fourth Style and it shows depictions of garlands, birds, embroidery borders and grotesques. We can reconstruct a system in which the architecture is glimpsed through narrow openings alternated with broad tapestry-like fields (main zone). This reconstruction is comparable to the decorations preserved in the Sanctuary of Bona Dea (Ostia V, X, 2).
