Choosing the cover crop terminating date is a key factor for enhancing their benefits but reducing their competition with the following main crop. For that, the water, nitrogen and crop modules of the WAVE model were calibrated (with an inverse calibration) and validated with continuous soil water content data, crop measurements and soil nitrogen content obtained from two different field experiments. Under actual climatic conditions, delaying the terminating date resulted in a crop biomass increment and higher soil depletion, reducing nitrate leaching risk but increasing competition with the main crop. The main crop hypothetical planting date was also an important factor, allowing to reduce the competence. Under climate change conditions, the differences increased respect to the fallow management and between termination dates, but increasing the CC effect as an environmental service.
