Numerous short stories of Silvina Ocampo are narrated from the point of view of a child. The visual perception of this child narrator is used to be restricted and fragmented. Even without any physical obstacle to sight, the child’s limited experience works as a screen which reduces the comprehension. This article aims at analysing the conditions, the powers and the effects of this child’s vision and of vision in general in the short stories of Silvina Ocampo. To this purpose, it first compares the child’s perception and the memory of childhood; secondly, it specifies the visionary powers of children; thirdly, it explains the absence of property of childhood memory, which is finally (fourthly) related to the children’s cruelty. The assumed hypothesis is that the Ocampian aesthetic perspective, which is based in the (child’s) vision, reveals a melancholic ontology.
