Overtopping is one of the frequent causes of breaching in an earthen dike. In such a case, the breaching process is initiated by the flow erosion on the downstream face of the dike, leading to lateral bank erosion and widening of the breach (Visser 1998). To analyse only the bed-erosion process without any interference with lateral sliding, this research focuses only on one-dimensional (1D) dike erosion by overtopping. The bed erosion process is analysed both experimentally and numerically.
