Food smart cities arise as innovative patterns to rethink and redesign urban food systems to be sustainable, accessible, of high quality and safe. They offer the opportunity to make local actors the protagonists of a healthy and secure food system while preserving the earth’s resources. A lot of cities have already started their journey towards sustainable urban food systems. This paper will analyze the incentives for cities to start their transition towards becoming food smart and to invest in food smart practices.
