The Epitome of Procopius of Gaza (6th cent.) on the Song of Songs is an exegetical treatise which, in the face of the difficulties of the biblical text, presents selective interpretations consisting of patristic citations. The case of Cant 2:17 gives a good idea of Procopius' work on the letter of the text. His allegorical developments are themselves based on the options taken by him regarding the literal sense, options which deserve study by 21st cent. students of the LXX. One sees in this case how ancient readers tried to deal with the problems posed by LXX Canticles. [Abstracted by: Christopher T. Begg]
