This article is a critical study of the French liturgical translation of Jn 20,9: the faith in the resurrection was not born of the christological understanding of the Scriptures, but from the discovery of the empty tomb. One cannot translate: "until then they had not understood the scriptures (NEB = TLB), but rather: "they did not know the scriptures yet". This passage is predicting the beatitude of v. 29, which goes beyond Thomas and is adressed to the reader; the latter is called to believe without having seen. The privileged position of the eyewitnesses is a quite different experience, as is the experience of the reader whose faith rests on scriptural revelation, and on the word of the resurrection witnesses as it is recorded in the Gospel.
