A beam of H(3p) atoms has been formed by laser excitation of metastable hydrogen atoms. The H(2s) beam is formed by charge exchange of protons in a cesium cell. Three components H(1s), H(2s) and H(3p) are present in the beam. The absolute cross sections for collisional ionization: H+X rarr H/sup +/ of these three components are written as sigma /sub 1/, sigma /sub 2/ and sigma /sub 3/ respectively. The authors measure the ratios sigma /sub 2// sigma /sub 1/ and sigma /sub 3// sigma /sub 2/ for He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe and H/sub 2/ as target gas, in the energy range 1.2-3.6 keV.
