This abstract replaces A81-103644 for which an incorrect bibliographic reference was given. l A simple and efficient method avoiding charge-state contamination problems is described to measure the lifetime of the metastable 2/b s//sub 1/2/ level in hydrogenlike ions. Applying the method to the phosphorus ion, the authors obtain the lifetime in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.
