Processing and Characterization of a Biocompatible Glass Matrix Composite Reinforced With Titanium Fibers

A biocompatible glass was reinforced with titanium fibres in order to obtain a composite suitable for application in orthopaedic implants. The composite was was prepared by hot pressing. The influence of the fibre volume fraction (up to 20%) on the Young's modulus, strength, and strain to failure was investigated. The composite exhibited a damage tolerant, pseudo-plastic behaviour. Due presumably to the thermal expansion mismatch between the fibres and the matrix, the interface bonding strength appeared fairly high, making possible toughening by bridging of the matrix cracks.
