Through the analysis of the items of the K-ABC, we present and illustrate an easy and efficient procedure to appraise differential item functioning : the Mantel-Haenszel procedure. We first emphasise the importance of item analysis to detect bias in psychological tests. Several methods to detect differential item functioning are then discussed. We present the theoretical background of the ManteI-Haenszel procedure and we show its advantages. We illustrate the full procedure comparing the functioning of the items of the K-ABC in regard to girls and boys. We explain the basic principles of interpretation of the statistical analysis. Finally, we point out some shortcomings of the procedure.
