This article examines how students (n=19) use ChatGPT in university German as a Foreign Language lessons to improve text quality, which individual attitudes and perceptions influence self-regulated learning with AI-based tools and what consequences this has for practice. The study uses a concurrent mixed-methods design that includes the collection of quantitative (closed items in a questionnaire) and qualitative data (open items in a reflection sheet). The aim of the study is to provide impulses for the promotion of writing skills and self-regulated learning with AI tools.
