Les historiographies nationales à l'épreuve du modernisme : écritures en prose et errances du sujet

Le fait que la signification de « modernisme » est différente selon les historiographies nationales est bien connu. Le présent article s’empare de cette doxa et la met à l’épreuve en comparant la situation du roman moderniste dans l’histoire de la littérature française et dans celles des autres aires géolinguistiques. Le point de départ est que l’étiquette moderniste associée au roman a fait l’objet d’un engouement critique tardif en France. En dépliant les raisons de ce retard, en faisant le point sur les travaux à ce sujet et en proposant de définir le roman moderniste comme un roman où les errances de sujets en perte de repères se reflètent dans la forme des œuvres, l’enjeu est ici d’interroger la portée et les bornes conventionnellement établies du modernisme. Se faisant, l’article contribue à un décloisonnement des historiographies nationales et à un élargissement des traits prototypiques du modernisme, garanties d’une compréhension plus juste et plus nuancée des proses publiées à la charnière des XIXe et XXe siècles.

(mul) : It is well known that the meaning of “modernism” varies according to national historiographies. This article examines this doxa and puts it to the test by comparing the situation of the modernist novel in the history of French literature with that of other geolinguistic areas. The starting point is that the modernist label attached to the novel has been the subject of a belated critical infatuation in France. By exploring the reasons for this delay, reviewing the work on the subject, and proposing to define the modernist novel as one in which the wanderings of disoriented subjects are reflected into the form of the works, the article aims to question the conventionally established scope and boundaries of modernism. In doing so, the article contributes to a decompartmentalisation of national historiographies, and to a broadening of the prototypical features of modernism. It thus seeks to ensure a more accurate and nuanced understanding of the prose published at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
