This essay suggests that the box Artists and Photographs, published in 1970 by Marion Goodman’s editing house Multiples, Inc., features the multiple as a new form of exhibition in which photography plays a crucial role. It will be argued that the multiple as exhibition relies less on photography’s often quoted qualities in terms of documentation, reproduction and information, but rather on its capacity to transform the world into a museum (Smithson) and its hybrid socio-cultural status as a complex environment drawing on heterogeneous codes, symbolic systems and ways of distribution.
