Clinicalandenvironmentalmeta-omicsstudiesareaccumulatinganever-growingamountofmicrobialabundancedataoverawiderangeofecosystems.Withasufficientlylargesamplenumber,thesemicrobialcommunitiescanbeexploredbyconstructingandanalyzingco-occurrencenetworks,whichdetecttaxonassociationsfromabundancedataandcangiveinsightsintocommunitystructure.Here,weinvestigatehowco-occurrencenetworksdifferacrossbiomesandwhichotherfactorsinfluencetheirproperties.Forthis,weinferredmicrobialassociationnetworksfrom20different16SrDNAsequencingdatasetsandobservedthatsoilmicrobialnetworksharborproportionallyfewerpositiveassociationsandarelessdenselyinterconnectedthanhost-associatednetworks.Afterexcludingsamplenumber,sequencingdepthandbeta-diversityaspossibledrivers,wefoundanegativecorrelationbetweencommunityevennessandpositiveedgepercentage.Thiscorrelationlikelyresultsfromaskeweddistributionofnegativeinteractions,whichtakeplacepreferentiallybetweenlessprevalenttaxa.Overall,ourresultssuggestanunder-appreciatedroleofevennessinshapingmicrobialassociationnetworks.
