In face of a huge upsurge in the waterway traffic in the 13th and 14th centuries, substantial works to improve the navigability are undertaken in many regions. From the available literature but also from the regulatory sources, princely ordinances in this particular case, we attempt to draw the current state of research in actual, under construction or planned works in the Netherlands from the 12th to the 16th century, mainly in the counties of Flanders and Hainaut and in the duchy of Brabant.
