The present study adopts the theoretical framework of discourse analysis, in particular the study of discourse markers. First of its kind for Lingála, it examines the morphological structure and investigates the empirical use of four expressions, on the basis of oral interactions collected in Kinshasa (2013). From the recording of the sound to the annotation of the linguistic data, via the encoding of metadata and the orthographic transcription, this work aims at conceptualizing and operationalising a synthesis of the global and contextual functions of (é)bóngó 'then', (é)kasi 'but', tálá 'look' and of the binomial na_personal pronoun in the static chain < verb_proclitic na _anaphoric pronoun of the grammatical subject >. These items function as adverb, conjunction, verb and prepositional syntagm, respectively, but they can “say” (illocution) and “do” (perlocution) more than what they mean. Profuse and multifunctional as most discourse markers in other languages, they can [i] (re)direct the statement to give another perspective in inferences, [ii] modulate interpretation by meta-discursive suggestion or constraint, and [iii] affect the dynamics of the social relationships, which are weaved and crystallized in speech acts. Based on the intertwining of various theories and different angles of approach (syntax, conversation, discursivity and relevance), this study highlights the assumption according to which the interpretative line of discourse markers takes place more intensely in the global intentionality and the meta-textual relation rather than in the specific lexical contents or the grammatical intra-textual function.
