The textures measured at different depths inside a cold rolled aluminium sheet are compared to results obtained by crystal plasticity predictions. Different assumptions about the micro-to-macro scale transitions are considered. The input texture reveals a through-thickness gradient that originates from hot rolling producing shear near the surface and conditions approaching plane strain compression in the center layer. Model predictions confirm experimental observations that such a gradient strengthens significantly during further heavy cold rolling.
