Widening Women's Work in Information and Communication Technology

Why are there so few women among the professionals of information and communication technology (ICT)? What are the barriers to women choosing and developing careers in ICT professions, and what changes are likely to improve their access and position in this labour market? This European project (Information Society Technologies, 5th Framework Programme) hinges on the development of an integrated approach to the different aspects of gender disparity in the ICT professions. It combines explanatory factors linked to education and training, with the conditions of work and employment, and with the technical and professional culture of ICT. Research teams in seven countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and United Kingdom) have carried out in-depth empirical studies. They suggest targeted recommendations for agents of change in this area.

(fre) Pourquoi y a-t-il si peu de femmes dans les métiers des technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC) ? Quels sont les obstacles auxquels les femmes sont confrontées quand elles choisissent une carrière dans ces métiers et quels changements seraient nécessaires pour améliorer leur accès et leur position sur ce marché du travail ? Le projet WWW-ICT développe une approche intégrée des différents facteurs qui peuvent expliquer les disparités liées au genre dans les professions des TIC: l'éducation et la formation, les conditions de travail et d'emploi, la cuture technique et professionnelle du monde des TIC. Des équipes de recherche ont mené des études de cas et des interviews biographiques dans sept pays (Autriche, Belgique, France, Italie, Irlande, Portugal et Royaume-Uni). Le rapport final avance une série de recommandations destinées aux "agents de changement" qui peuvent promouvoir une meilleure égalité professionnelle dans les métiers des TIC.
