High Speed Counter Current Chromatography (HSCCC) has been used to isolate and purify two quaternary alkaloids from a sample of curare prepared by the Panare Indians of Estado Bolivar, Venezuela. One of the compounds is the known base macusine B (1). The other one is a new but related base named panarine (2). Its structure has been established unequivocally by spectral and X-ray crystallographic analysis.
