Contrastive Word-Formation

This special issue of Poznań Studies in Contemporary Linguistics aims to examine the field of contrastive word-formation, a research area which pertains to three distinct linguistic disciplines – morphology, lexicology and contrastive linguistics – and which, to date, has remained relatively neglected. The issue brings together ten articles that deal with the contrastive analysis of various word-formation processes (mainly prefixation, suffixation, compounding and conversion), which involves the discussion of key contrastive concepts such as the tertium comparationis, the selection of suitable data or the possible practical applications in bilingual lexicography, among others. In all cases, the contributions pursue their objectives by using English as one term of the comparison and establishing a contrast with one or two European languages (namely Bulgarian, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish).
