Phronesis is a key concept of Aristotelian ethics. But how to understand the phronimos’s specific ability in relation to the action ? He is a good judge of what to do hic et nunc. According to Aristotle the phronimos deliberates and judges well; and he evaluates what to do by referring not only to the particular case but to universal. What is this relationship between a particular case and a universal if it differs from the relationship between the particular and the universal in a mathematical deduction? The hypothesis followed here is that the universal instance is rather a single ideal built by the imagination from a variety of unique experiences, on the model of the ideal of beauty described by Kant
