Synthesis of the aperture distributions yielding the best rejection of noise or interfering sources located in a given region of the radiation pattern is examined. Previous methods are reviewed. It is shown that they are not always optimum or require too much computer time, or yield too complicated distributions for practical purposes. The proposed method permits the optimisation of the gain-to-temperature ratio for an arbitrary distribution of noise and interfering sources; it avoids superdirectivity and even unnecessary sophistication of the distribution. Results are presented for linear and circular apertures with symmetrical distributions.
