Analytical electron microscopy is used to describe the oxidic precursory state of Co-Mo supported on SiO/sub 2/ and gamma -Al /sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts. A method is developed to evaluate by EPMA the concentration of the phases dispersed on the surface of the carrier at a scale lower than the resolution limit of the microscopic observation. The catalysts supported on SiO/sub 2/ exhibit a large mutual affinity of cobalt and molybdenum to form crystallized CoMoO/sub 4/ aggregates. The dispersion of cobalt on gamma -Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ appears highly favoured by the previous dispersion of molybdenum. Some factors working against the dispersion of the active phases are pointed.
