In young children born to HIV-positive mothers, diagnosis of HIV infection with serologic methods (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blot) is difficult because of the placental transfer of maternal IgG in the fetal circulation. When possible, virologic methods (virus culture, polymerase chain reaction) should be used. When not possible, pediatric clinical. AIDS definitions are recommended [1-3].
