Words that precede words.
How can we make space and at the same time hold up things, words, bodies? Where can we put them, where can we make them be? How can we place them, side by side, in the flow of a continuous discourse?
In this work we have placed words and things inside continents. Continents that open up and make up a continuous space. Continents that are partitions within a whole, and that, in a geographic key, partition the surface of the earth and create stories inside them, just as discourses flow inside each word.
In order to name the way in which things stand in the space opened by each continent we have used some variants of the word sistere (latin, ?to be there?). Ex-sist, con-sist, in-sist and per-sist, are the names of the continents inside which we group things and words, with which we want to touch and enact, a discourse about the place-things of architecture.
In our transit (transire, ?to go through?) through these continents, in this passage-dwelling, the wall places itself as an insistent, consistent, persistent, resistant figure. A wall that is as subjacent (that subsists) as the necessary subject (sub-iectum) within these pages.
In this project each continent makes space, opens up space, on one side for a set of images (image-things), and on the other for a flux (set) of words (word-things). The space in-between these two surfaces (images and words) organizes itself each time both surfaces come into contact: from the proximity/distance of their interdependence to the proximity/distance of a background or void.
Lastly, we would like to mention the importance that Barthes? seminars, Comment vivre ensemble (1976-1977), Le Neutre (1977-1978) and Fragments d'un discours amoureux (1977) have had to the composition of this thesis. The active method Barthes employs in these seminars is more a being-in-between-things (words, ideas, categories, metaphoric/metonymic unfoldings) than a mere linear progression of causes and effects. This work tries to take advantage of the effects of truth (effets de vérité) that can result from this method. Without being explicitly quoted in this text, Barthes? seminars pervade and underlie the structure of words woven by this homo faber.
