ARES is the first naturalistic study to assess the effect of a pharmacological agent in alcoholism: a) drug administered in general practice, the usual location for prescribing drug for alcoholism. b) Medication was administered as the most possible representative as it is currently administered. c) This study was planned to produce the most representative image of the studied pathology, this way, minimal selection criteria were used so that the collected sample can be considered as statistically representative of the actual target population of alcoholics in France. In this part, change in quality of life was questioned. This was Phase IV Randomized Controlled Multicentre parallel groups open label study of the efficacy of acamprosate versus any other except acamprosate. The duration was 1 year with visits at M-1 (selection), M0 (randomization), M3, M6,M9, and M12. ARES est le premier essai dit pragmatique étudiant le suivi prospectif de patients alcooliques sous l'action d'un agent pharmacologique. Les caractéristiques de ce essai sont: a) prescription du produit en médecine généraliste, environnement usuel de prescription de produits dans l'alcoolisme, b) la thérapie a été administrée de manière aussi similaire que possible de la thérapie courante, c) les conditions générales de suivi du malade aussi représentatives que possible de la pratique courante. L'étude fut open-label, randomisée en deux groupes parallèles de traitement: a) tout traitement classique, b) ce même traitement + acamprosate. La durée dut d'une année avec des investigations à M0? M3, M6 et M12. Resultats: 149 généralistes ont participé à cette etude et 462 patients ont été recrutés.
