In this paper, the use of the stepped frequency modulation for an automotive application is studied. This modulation suffers from range-Doppler coupling and quadratic phase variations. To address this issue, a repetitive modulation scheme is used. To remain at a low computational cost, the choice is made to base the range and velocity estimation on IDFTs, thereby making the range-Doppler coupling and quadratic phase variations distortions. The effects of these distortions are studied and a compensation method is introduced. The performance of the compensation method is illustrated by means of simulation results.
