The role of the German secret police forces in the field of counterintelligence during the Second World War has been quite well investigated by academic research. However, the activities, and even the existence, of their World War One predecessors remain largely ignored. This paper gives an overview of the organization and work of the Geheime Feldpolizei (GFP), the German secret military police during the period 1914-1918, and focus on its role in fighting Allied military intelligence behind the German lines. It raises the question of the adequacy of the means and organization of the GFP, and its capacity to fulfill the role of military counterintelligence.
