In Bressanona, at the ceremony to award the first Edoardo Benvenuto Prize,1 I tried to point out the many different fields that influence architecture—artistic, mathematical, technological, sociological—in order to be able to focus on the interaction that Edoardo Benvenuto and I named “Between Mechanics and Architecture”. Here I wish to define more precisely what this title means, and what it includes. First I have to point out an essential aspect of this study which, regretfully, does not appear in the title: history. In fact, the understanding of the actual relationship may be facilitated by the analysis of the historical relationships between the science of mechanics and the art of architecture, throughout the ages.
