Le vitrail et son décor dans les Anciens Pays-Bas au XVIIe siècle

(fre) Si souvent délaissé des études scientifiques, le patrimoine verrier du XVIIe siècle, et plus précisément le vitrail, tend à se faire une place à travers ce mémoire. Ici, seront observées, analysées et étudiées des œuvres monumentales de la production verrière du XVIIe siècle dans les Anciens Pays-Bas présentant un intérêt par leur dispositif architectural richement orné. Il s’agit des verrières de la chapelle Notre-Dame Libératrice de la cathédrale de Bruxelles et celles du cloître de l’abbaye du Parc à Heverlee. Ce mémoire propose une approche formelle systématique de l’ornementation des verrières, un inventaire méthodique des motifs décoratifs confrontant le XVIe et XVIIe siècle ainsi qu’une étude de la syntaxe architecturale et ornementale. La seconde partie de ce mémoire tend à ouvrir le champ de recherche en confrontant le vitrail à d’autres médiums avec lesquels il partage des analogies formelles comme les retables, les frontispices et les festivités éphémères.

(eng) Although often neglected in scientific studies, the glass heritage of the 17th century, and more specifically stained glass, is now being given a place in this thesis. Here, monumental works of the 17th century glass production in the Old Netherlands will be observed, analysed and studied, which are interesting because of their richly decorated architectural arrangement. These are the windows of the Chapel of Our Lady Liberator in Brussels Cathedral and the cloister of the Parc Abbey in Heverlee. This thesis proposes a systematic formal approach to the ornamentation of the stained glass windows, a methodical inventory of the decorative motifs comparing the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a study of the architectural and ornamental syntax. The second part of this thesis tends to open up the field of research by confronting stained glass with other media with which it shares formal analogies, such as altarpieces, frontispieces and ephemeral festivities.
