The Story of Kullervo and On ‘The Kalevala’: Traduction commentée

(fre) Ce mémoire est une traduction commentée de deux textes rédigés par J.R.R. Tolkien dans la première moitié du vingtième siècle. Les versions originales sont disponibles dans l’ouvrage The Story of Kullervo de J.R.R. Tolkien, édité par Verlyn Flieger et publié par HarperCollinsPublishers en 2015. Le premier texte est une adaptation de l’histoire de Kullervo, un jeune garçon au destin tragique dont l’histoire originale est contée dans le Kalevala, un recueil de ballades et poèmes paru en Finlande dans les années 1830 et considéré par certains comme l’épopée nationale finlandaise. Le second texte est une sorte d’essai à propos du Kalevala et de la culture finlandaise à travers lequel le lecteur est amené à découvrir les différentes merveilles que contient cette œuvre peu connue dans les pays occidentaux.

(eng) This thesis is a commented translation of two texts written by J.R.R. Tolkien in the first half of the twentieth century. The original texts can be found in the book called The Story of Kullervo by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Verlyn Flieger and published by HarperCollinsPublishers in 2015. The first text is an adaptation of the story of Kullervo, a young boy whose tragic fate is told in The Kalevala, a collection of ballads and poems that came out in Finland in the 1830s and that is considered by some to be the national Finnish epic. The second text is a kind of essay about The Kalevala and the Finnish culture. In this essay, Tolkien lets the reader discover some of the marvellous stories told in this piece of work that is quite unknown in our western countries.
