Donald Trump started in 2018 a trade war with multiple countries. China was identified as the biggest threat. The most notable instrument of the trade war are tariffs put on the import of Chinese goods. This trade policy marks a shift from the decades of the free market, tariff-less approach towards international trade and it could impact global economic system in the future. Subsequent retaliation by trading partners risks hampering global trade and investment. Additionally, trade war might shift global supply chains to the other Asian countries which could rearrange global power structure. Trade war and its policy instruments - tariffs and trade barriers are deeply rooted in the political and economic differences of countries. Such policies are often used by populist politicians from both sides of the political spectrum. The goal of this thesis is to explore the relation between politics and economy on the case of the USA-China trade war.
