The use of social media played a fundamental strategic role during the 2016 American presidential election. It changed the way campaigns were traditionally run. Donald Trump was particularly gifted at using social media as the Republican nominee for President. Trump’s political views during the campaign resonated with his already big crowd of followers on Twitter. This thesis investigates Trump’s unconventional use of Twitter during the 2016 presidential election compared to his political opponent, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee. Did Donald Trump’s unconventional use of social media result in a more positive response than that of his opponent, Hillary Clinton? Is the question we will try to answer in this thesis. This thesis is based on an analysis of the Twitter feeds of both candidates on three different events that took place during the presidential elections.
