Hilary Mantel’s representation of Cromwell’s identity in Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies

(eng) In writing this master dissertation, my aim is to discuss Hilary Mantel’s representation of Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Using real historical events, Hilary Mantel managed to render Cromwell “tolerant, passionate, intellectually inquisitive, humane” (Benfey 2009). My study strives to highlight the complex personality of Thomas Cromwell. From the beginning of his life onwards Thomas Cromwell had to fashion his identity in an unstable family environment, lacking essential reference points. Afterwards, acquiring both political knowledge and artistic insight Mantel’s Cromwell became the powerful Master Secretary.

(fre) Mon mémoire a pour but d’aborder la question de l’identité de Thomas Cromwell, le conseiller d’Henry VIII, dans les oeuvres d’Hilary Mantel: Wolf Hall et Bring Up the Bodies. En utilisant de réels éléments historiques, Hilary Mantel est parvenue à donner une image positive et nuancée de Thomas Cromwell, ce que personne n’avait fait avant elle. Depuis sa naissance, Thomas Cromwell a du bâtir son identité en composant avec un environnement parfois très chaotique. Malgré tout, grâce à un éventail très large de connaissances et tel un vrai uomo universale, Cromwell a atteint les hautes sphères de la société des Tudors et a réussi à se forger sa propre identité.
