Arguments for Brexit : Rhetorical Analysis and Comparison of The Communication of Key Actors in the Leave Campaign

(fre) Le Brexit est un thème complexe qui occupe une grand partie des médias britanniques depuis son annonce en 2013, par le leader du parti conservateur, David Cameron. Trois ans plus tard, le 23 juin 2016, le peuple britannique vota lors d'un référendum déjà qualifié d'historique et de décision la plus importante que les habitant du Royaume-Uni ont eu à faire en un siècle. Ce jour là, le Royaume-Uni décida de quitter l'Union Européenne à la suite d'une campagne riche en événements positifs comme négatifs. L'objectif de ce mémoire est d'analyser les arguments proposés par les ténors de la Leave campaign, la campagne ayant pour objectif de quitter l'UE afin de déterminer si cette campagne était homogène ou non. Cette question se pose car à l'inverse de la campagne ayant pour objectif de rester dans l'Union qui était formée d'une campagne faisant bloc, la "Leave campaign" était, elle, composée de différents groupes aux intérêts parfois fort différents comme vous pourrez le lire. Ayant des objectifs différents, les arguments apportés par ces différents groupes étaient-ils similaires ou non, si oui jusqu'à quel point. Afin de répondre à cette question, il est tout d'abord important de se replonger dans l'histoire du Royaume-Uni. Il n'est en effet pas possible de comprendre les motivations et les arguments de ceux qui désirent sortir de l'UE sans quelques piqûres de rappel. Lorsqu'on observe d'un peu plus l'histoire du Royaume-Uni et celle de l'UE on se rend rapidement compte qu'elle n'a pas toujours été rose et que la volonté de quitter l'Union ne date pas d'hier mais remonte à l'adhésion même du Royaume-Uni à l’Union qui déjà à l’époque était très controversée. Ensuite, il est aussi nécessaire de rappeler rapidement les évènements les plus importants de la campagne car ils ont joué un rôle important dans le développement de celle-ci et dans la manière avec laquelle les intervenants ont abordé certains arguments. Dans la troisième partie de ce mémoire, je me suis employé à analyser les arguments des intervenants les plus emblématiques de la Leave campaign afin de savoir de quelle manières ceux-ci s’étaient exprimés sur les grandes questions du Brexit, mais aussi sur celles qui ont parfois été oubliées. L’objectif était d’analyser de quelle manière les intervenants de la Leave campaign ont abordé les grandes questions que le fait de quitter l’Union implique, avec quels arguments ont-ils justifiés leur choix, et quelles solutions ont-ils apportés pour répondre aux inquiétudes de la population. L’objectif étant toujours de mettre en lumière les similarités ou les différences que l’on pouvait observer entre les différents groupes militants pour la sortie du Royaume-Uni de l’UE. Dans la dernière partie de ce mémoire, je présente les résultats de mon analyse et en tire les conclusions.

(eng) Brexit is a complex topic that occupied a large share of the media since it has been announced in 2013 by the leader of the Conservative Party David Cameron. Three years later, on the 23rd of June 2016, the British people voted in the context of an historical referendum which was already called the most important decision the British people had to make in a century. That day, the British people decided to leave the EU after a campaign full of positive but also negative events. The objective of this thesis is to analyse the arguments put forward by the key actors of the Leave campaign to determine if this campaign was homogenous or not. The question is raised by the fact that the Leave campaign was composed of smaller organizations which had, as we will see, different objectives. The Remain campaign was united in one bloc campaigning for the UK to remain a member of the EU. As the small organizations had different objectives, were the arguments they put forward different, and if so, to which extent? To answer this question it is important to take a look back at the history of the UK. Indeed, it is impossible to understand the arguments and the motivations of the Leave campaigners without being aware of certain historic facts. When we take a look at the common history of the UK and the EU, we realize that everything has not always been easy and that this will to leave the EU has deep roots within the British society as the entry of the UK in the EU was already controversial from the very beginning. Then, it is also necessary to take a look back at the key events of the referendum campaign as those events also played an important role in the way the campaigners tackled certain topics. In the third part of this thesis, I analysed the arguments of the key actors of the Leave campaign to observe the way they tackled the key issues of Brexit. The objective was to analyse the way the key actors tackled the main issues that the fact of leaving the EU implied, with which arguments did they justify their choice to leave and what solution did they put forward to ease the worries of the population and with which words. The objective remained to observe the similarities or the differences they were between the different groups of the Leave campaign. In the last part of this thesis, I present the results of this analysis and draw the conclusion accordingly.
